A virtual reality specialist that finds its roots in the Galapagos Islands, German company Spree Interactive was founded by Ecuadorian native Jonathan Nowak Delgado and has gone from strength to strength since its inception in 2015.
Based in Nuremberg, Spree is a leading provider of family-friendly active free-roam VR experiences, with the company specialising in the development of turnkey, large-scale products that are active, social and fun.
In addition to free roam experiences, Spree is also part of a vehicle-based experience, with the company’s sensor fusion VR tracking technology now available as a turnkey upgrade for bumper cars.
Planet Attractions spoke to Delgado at this year’s IAAPA Expo Europe, learning more about the company, its foundations, the technology, his experience of the event and more.
What was the foundation of Spree?
“I founded the company seven years ago. We are a spin-off from the Applied Research Institute - the birthplace of the MP3.”
What does your company do?
“We’re the world leader when it comes to family-friendly VR. That means there's no single other company out there which has more experience in catering to 6-12-year olds.
Using immersive technology including VR/AR, we're selling our technology to theme parks and family entertainment centres globally.
We've grown 250% for the last three years consecutively. We've got a growing team coming out of Germany and we also have a subsidiary in Austin, Texas, US.”
What were you doing at this year’s IAAPA Expo Europe?
“So we were fortunate to have our products represented on three separate booths at this year's show.
The first was our Spree Arena, which can cater for up to 200 virtual reality players per hour.
The second one is the virtual reality bumper car, which we do with our partner I.E. Park, which is the world's leader in bumper cars and is based out of Italy.
The third one is Eurogames games, which is also an Italian manufacturer of bumper cars and we upgrade their bumper cars with a virtual reality headset.”
How was your show experience?
“It's great after Barcelona, which was the first show after Covid to get together again. Literally, you can walk 10 minutes in one direction and you're still in the show.
It's been great just to meet the people again and the response to our product has been phenomenal.”
What’s your favourite attraction?
“I'm so fortunate to have been born on the Galapagos Islands, which is part of Ecuador. I was also so fortunate to work as a tour guide and translator on the islands, so my favourite attraction is actually the Galapagos Islands themselves. It has nothing to do with VR. It's good old nature!”
