London’s Natural History Museum (NHM) has announced the appointment of Jessica Bradford as its inaugural Director of Collections, a pivotal new role created to help shape the institution’s collections and acquisitions strategy.

Overseeing the development and stewardship of NHM’s collections, Bradford has been tasked with ensuring the museum remains a vital resource for global scientific research and knowledge-sharing.

Bradford brings with her an impressive portfolio in museum leadership, collections management, and audience engagement. As the current head of Collections and Principal Curator at the London Science Museum, Bradford has led high-impact projects, innovated in collections care, and greatly enhanced public access to museum resources.

In addition to several roles at the Science Museum, Jessica was also co-head of Public Engagement and Programmes at the History of Science Museum in Oxford.

For the Science Museum Group, Bradford has played a key role in transformative projects, including curatorial oversight of exhibitions and the large-scale relocation of over 300,000 objects as part of the One Collection programme. This initiative, which moved objects to the Hawking Building at the Science and Innovation Park in Wiltshire, is one of the most significant moments in the museum’s history.

“This is an extraordinary opportunity to work with world-class collections and contribute to the museum’s vital mission,” said Bradford. “I’m passionate about unlocking the potential of these collections for research, education, and public engagement, and I look forward to working with the talented team at the Natural History Museum to achieve this.”

Bradford will begin her tenure at the Museum in early March 2025, where she will lead NHM’s efforts to expand the impact of its collections on science, research, and public learning.

"Jessica's remarkable experience in museum leadership and her dedication to making collections accessible will enhance our quest to identify solutions from and for nature,” said Dr Tim Littlewood, executive director of Science at NHM.

“Our national treasures, as they stand today and as we continue to acquire in the future, not only reveal nature’s history and present state, they also indicate future trends and identify where and how we take action.”
