BBC Studios has partnered with Reality+, a Web3 specialist, to develop a collection of immersive experiences for the metaverse.

Few details are currently known about the experiences, however, they will be designed around several BBC IPs, including Doctor Who and Top Gear, and are set to launch on The Sandbox - a VR gaming platform where fans can interact with immersive content and even build and monetise their own experiences.

The venture marks the BBC’s first foray into the metaverse and comes following a series of brand activation trials on metaverse platforms, including the Doctor Who: Worlds Apart digital trading card game, which was also developed by Reality+.

BBC Studio’s metaverse space will launch on The Sandbox later this year, when it will become one of more than 400 entertainment brands, such as Ubisoft, The Walking Dead and Warner Music Group, to have a digital presence on the platform.

“While the metaverse is still in its infancy, it may shape how we consume and experience entertainment in the future and I’m looking forward to seeing how fans interact with our brands in this space,” said Nicki Sheard, president of Brands and Licensing at BBC Studios.

The Sandbox COO and co-founder Sebastien Borget said: “The BBC has a history of pioneering content that leverages the latest technology and putting it into mainstream households.

“We think this venture is an important step to bringing British culture and fans into virtual worlds.”
