Stranger Things slated for stage adaptation after fourth season receives record viewings

An official stage production based on Stranger Things is in the works after the series became Netflix’s first English-language show to be viewed for more than one billion hours

Stranger Things 4 became Netflix’s first English Language series to receive more than one billion hours

A new theatre production based on the smash-hit Netflix series Stranger Things is currently in development, the streaming giant has confirmed.

The project, currently in the early phases of development, is shrouded in secrecy, with details such as the show’s plot line and where it will open still under wraps. However, we do know that it will be set within the “world and mythology” of Stranger Things and overseen by show creators Matt and Ross Duffer, with two British theatre veterans; Stephen Daldry and Sonia Freidman attached to direct and produce.

The play will be just one of several spin-off projects overseen by the Duffer Brothers, who have recently formed their own production company; Upside Down Productions, named for the show’s hellish parallel universe.

The news comes just days after the release of the second half of the show’s fourth season, which has already received record viewings, becoming the first season of an English language show to be watched for more than one billion hours on the platform.

This success has led to Netflix announcing several new projects with the Duffer Brothers, including a Stranger Things spin-off series, based on an original idea by the brothers, as well as adaptations of Stephen King and Peter Straub’s novel The Talisman and Manga series Death Note.

Speaking to the Happy Sad Confused podcast Ross Duffer said that Stranger Things spin-off would be “1,000% different” from the original series.

Commenting on the announcement, Netflix co-chief executive and chief content officer Ted Sarandos said: “Matt and Ross are an exceptionally unique talent with a vision so crisp and clear.

“They’re all about the details – it’s no accident that Stranger Things has pierced the zeitgeist to become the epic pop culture phenomenon it is today.”
