Coachella - the world-famous music and arts festival based in Riverside County, California - has been forced to cancel for the second year in a row due to the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The festival was scheduled to take place between April 9 and April 18, 2021, with headliners including Rage Against the Machine, Travis Scott and Frank Ocean.

Stagecoach, a festival held on the same site that celebrates country music, will also not go ahead as planned.

According to a statement from the Riverside County public health officer the festivals are unable to run due to the ‘dire COVID-19 situation in the region’.

“If COVID-19 were detected at these festivals, the scope and number of attendees and the nature of the venue would make it infeasible, if not impossible, to track those who may be placed at risk,” said Dr Cameron Kaiser, who signed the public health order cancelling the festivals.

This news comes shortly after organisers of the Glastonbury Festival in the UK were also forced to cancel their event.

“With great regret, we must announce that this year’s Glastonbury Festival will not take place, and that this will be another enforced fallow year for us,” said Michael and Emily Eavis in a statement.

“In spite of our efforts to move heaven and earth, it has become clear that we simply will not be able to make the Festival happen this year. We are sorry to let you all down.”
