Adult entertainment provider Pornhub has removed a number of video and audio tours referencing erotic art from its website following complaints from the Italy’s Uffizi Gallery, Spain’s Museo Nacional del Prado and the Louvre in France.
The pornography website - the tenth most-visited site in the world - last month launched ‘Classic Nudes’ - an interactive guide to some of the erotic art that can be discovered in major museums around the world.
The initiative, said Pornhub, was created to attract new visitors to museums following the pandemic, while also enticing its audience to experience art.
Each guide could be read in the museum or at home, and came with an audio tour “blending history with humour” and voiced by pornographic actress Asia Akira. There were also a number of graphic videos, which have since been removed from the website following the complaints from the three institutions.
In a statement, the Uffizi, based in Florence, said that it was planning to take legal action against Pornhub related to copyright infringement. The institution objected specifically to a pornographic reenactment of Titian’s Venus of Urbino, telling the Art Newspaper that the use of its paintings had “been done without any permission”.
Similarly, the Louvre in Paris launched legal action for Pornhub’s use of Gabrielle d’Estrees and One of Her Sisters, while the Prado in Madrid took action against the use of a number of works in its collection, including Francisco de Goya’s La Maja Dednuda.
For anyone interested in exploring Pornhub’s Classic Nudes, content from other famous institutions - such as the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the National Gallery in London - are still included as part of the guide.
