Liseberg sues insurer Trygg-Hansa over denied €92m Oceana fire claim

Liseberg has filed a lawsuit against insurance provider Trygg-Hansa for denying the Swedish theme park’s insurance claim following the fire that destroyed its new indoor water park, Oceana, in February 2024.

The highly anticipated attraction in Gothenburg, Sweden, was shortly due to open before the fire broke out. The blaze tragically claimed the life of one employee, injured 22 others, and caused extensive structural damage.

Liseberg is seeking compensation to cover the estimated €92m (US$108m, £79m) cost of demolition, decontamination, and reconstruction.

Despite Liseberg holding comprehensive project insurance, including all-risk property damage cover, Trygg-Hansa denied the claim on June 30, 2025.

The insurer argued that Oceana does not represent an "insurable interest" and stated that Liseberg has not suffered any compensable damage, even though the park operator is Oceana’s sole owner and financier.

According to Trygg-Hansa, although Liseberg itself did not act negligently, the company is still not entitled to compensation due to what the insurer describes as gross negligence by two of Liseberg’s contractors, which it claims led to the fire.

In response, Liseberg has initiated legal proceedings at Stockholm District Court. The lawsuit demands that Trygg-Hansa pay for the extensive property damage, as well as interest and legal costs.

“Liseberg took out the project insurance with Trygg-Hansa to get financial protection against this type of risk to the construction project. The insurance was supposed to account for the fact that it is a large and very costly construction with several contractors performing work for Liseberg. That Trygg-Hansa is now trying to avoid responsibility that Liseberg has not suffered any damage is hard to understand,” said Lisberg CEO Andreas Anderson.

“It is not reasonable that Liseberg should be denied insurance compensation because the insurance company considers that parties other than Liseberg have been negligent. We therefore see no other way forward than to file a lawsuit and have Liseberg’s right to insurance compensation tried by the court.”
