At least 30 people have been injured after a Ferris wheel at a music festival in Germany caught fire.
The ride at the Highfield Festival at Stormthaler Lake, near Leipzig, caught fire on the evening of Saturday August 17th, with photos showing two pods engulfed in flames. Operators of the wheel reportedly spun the wheel in reverse in order to station the flaming cabins at the top of the ride in an attempt to stop the fire spreading.
According to Germany’s Red Cross, two of the 30 injured are in a serious condition, while four people suffered burns and one was injured in a fall. 18 were affected by smoke inhalation. Media reports also said that four police officers were among those injured.
“Those affected are receiving treatment and are doing well considering the circumstances,” said a statement from the festival following the blaze.
“We are in close coordination with the fire brigade, the police and the rescue and medical services,” the statement added.
The cause of the fire remains unknown. Highfield Festival is one of Germany’s largest independent rock festivals, with thousands attending the event each year.
