Cirque Du Soleil has made its long-awaited return to Las Vegas after more than a year away thanks to COVID-19.
Returning on June 28 with Mystère at Treasure Island and then July 1 with O at the Bellagio, the shows are just the start for Montreal-based Cirque, which is making moves to relaunch its brand in locations across North America and the rest of the world.
"It’s an incredible moment to see the audience back in our theatre again after more than 15 months," said Eric Grilly, senior vice president for Cirque's Resident Shows Division. "The cast and crew are absolutely thrilled to be back on stage in the entertainment capital of the world."
In addition to the two reopened shows, Cirque’s presentations of Michael Jackson ONE and The Beatles LOVE are set to return on August 19 and August 26 respectively.
In addition to its Vegas dates, Alegria will reopen in Houston, Texas, starting November 18, while the cirque associated Blue Man Group are planning to return to both Chicago and New York on August 18 and September 3. In Montreal, Canada, shows under the Big Top will resume in the spring of 2022.
Overseas, Cirque’s touring division resumes operations starting with Kooz? in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, in November. In January 2022, Cirque’s Luzia is coming to London’s famous Royal Albert Hall.
The return to touring represents a huge step for Cirque du Soleil, which was forced to cancel all of its shows in March last year and cut nearly 3,500 members of staff as a direct result of the pandemic. The company was sold to a group of its creditors led by the Catalyst Capital Group at the end of 2020 after it was forced to file for creditor protection.
