London Zoo has responded to a request from comedian and long-time animal rights campaigner, Ricky Gervais, to be fed to the zoo’s lions following his death.

Gervais, who made the proposal on US chat show Conan, said that he wanted to “give back”.

“I thought it would be good to be just fed to the lions at London Zoo,” Gervais told host Conan O’Brien. “We never give anything back. We’re not even food for other things.

I’d like to see the look on tourists' faces when they throw this dead, fat, naked, 73-year-old, maybe, if I’m lucky, to the lions, and as it lands, some people go - is that the bloke from The Office?”

Responding to Gervais’ comments, Kathryn England, London Zoo COO, told The Sun: “I suspect Ricky may be a bit gristly for our lions”.

London Zoo, like many animal attractions around the world has faced severe financial pressure over the last year. In further response to Gervais’ request, England made an appeal of her own.

“We’re struggling financially because of lockdown,” she said. “So if anyone wants to ‘give something back’, we welcome donations that will keep our lions fed on a more suitable diet.”
