A new exhibition celebrating Paddington Bear will open at The British Library in London later this year.

The exhibition, titled Paddington: The Story of a Bear, will open later this year on July 9, running through to October 31.

Taking visitors inside the iconic bear’s creation, the exhibition will feature more than 50 books, including a First Edition of A Book Called Paddington; the book that started it all, as well as photographs, original illustrations, film clips, sound recordings and other memorabilia.

Visitors will also be able to follow Paddington’s marmalade trail, practise their own hard stares and take a ‘self pawtrait’.

The British Library has also collaborated with two local schools - Edith Neville Primary School and Argyle Primary School - on content for the experience.

Alison Bailey, lead curator of Paddington: The Story of a Bear, said: “This exhibition reminds us why, over 60 years on from his creation, Paddington still resonates with people of all ages, wherever they are in the world. We hope visitors enjoy following this loveable bear on his adventures and discovering his stories.”

Created in 1958 by author Michael Bond, who was inspired by a lone teddy bear in a toy shop close to Paddington station, the iconic marmalade-loving bear from Peru remains as beloved today as he was back then.

Since his inception, Paddington Bear has appeared in 14 books, a stop-motion animated television series and two hit feature films, where he was voiced by British actor Ben Whishaw who is also known for his portrayal as the most recent version of Q in the James Bond franchise.

Paddington has also appeared on the 50-pence piece, visiting several London landmarks in a series of designs produced by the Royal Mint.
