Zach Galifianakis headlines LA return for Glasgow’s viral for all the wrong reasons Willy Wonka experience

The event so bad the police were called is set to make its return, with Zach Galifianakis and the ‘sad Oompa Loompa’ Kirsty Paterson both set to appear in the reimagined version of the infamous Willy’s Chocolate Experience in Los Angeles later this month

The infamous Willy’s Chocolate Experience, an “immersive” experience so bad the police ended up being called by angry parents, is set for a shock return, with comedian Zach Galifianakis set to play a key role in the spectacular flop as it makes its way to Los Angeles.

Originally taking place in Glasgow, Scotland, the unofficial event made global headlines as its promises of immersive scenes and unlimited sweets turned out to be a couple of backdrops and actors inside a large warehouse, with children receiving “two jelly beans and a quarter of a cup of lemonade.” The experience also featured ‘The Unknown’ - an AI-generated nightmare that scared the children present.

Kirsty Paterson, who famously appeared as a sad-looking Oompa Loompa during the event, will star in its reimagining alongside Galifianakis, known for comedies such as The Hangover and Between Two Ferns.

Instead of promising an immersive experience, this version of the show invites visitors to “step into a world of pure imagination at Willy’s Chocolate Experience Los Angeles as chocolate memes come to life” inside a “nondescript” warehouse, with the event offering customers “two free jelly beans” for a US$44 (€40, £35) ticket.

In addition to appearing, Paterson will also take part in a special Q&A session alongside Galifianakis for the event, which takes place April 28. The listing also says that “Hollywood heartthrob Timothée Chalamet has expressed interest in attending”. Chalamet famously played Willy Wonka in 2023’s Wonka - a prequel to the iconic Roald Dahl character’s appearance in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

In addition to the experience itself and Q&A sessions, the event will also feature live music, film screenings, DJs and food vendors. Its original organiser, Billy Coul, is not involved with the LA version.
