Virtual Disney Metaverse theme park a ‘long-term possibility’

Disney is set to offer Disney+ streaming content and interactive immersive 3D gameplay experiences through a virtual headset, with a virtual theme park remaining a ‘long-term possibility’, according to reports.

A goal of former CEO Bob Chapek to present “next-generation storytelling” through the Metaverse, Bob Iger looks to have picked up the torch on this front, after partnering with Apple on the flagship Vision Pro headset.

On launch in 2024, Disney+ will be available to stream through the headset, but the “spatial computer”, which is designed to seamlessly blend digital content with the physical world, could also be used to fuel Disney’s virtual park ambitions.

Chapek had previously hinted at the ability to “experience the company’s theme parks from a virtual standpoint,” and with the Apple partnership, virtual theme parks are seen as a long-term possibility. When Apple unveiled the headset, a sizzle reel showed among other things, a user interacting with a virtual recreation of Tatooine from Star Wars and the Main Street Electrical Parade and fireworks at Disney World’s Magic Kingdom brought to life in the viewer’s home.

“We’re constantly in search of new ways to entertain, inform, and inspire our fans by combining extraordinary creativity with groundbreaking technology to create truly remarkable experiences,” said Iger.

“The first time I tried Apple Vision Pro, the thing that struck me the most was how it allowed us to create deeply personal experiences that bring our fans closer to the characters they love, and more deeply immersed in our stories. This platform will allow us to bring Disney to our fans in ways that were previously impossible.”
