Celebrating 45 years since the release of Space Invaders, a new mobile app turning real-world locations into the iconic videogame has launched worldwide.
Called Space Invaders: World Defense, the game is powered by Google’s ARCore and Geospatial API and has been developed by Taito alongside digital out-of-home media company Ocean Outdoor to launch in nine cities across Europe.
Appearing on large format screens in Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Glasgow, Helsinki, London, Leeds, Newcastle, Oslo and Stockholm, these digital portals when used with the app trigger AR battles with 3D Space Invaders.
Using Ocean Outdoor’s DeepScreen technique, when looking at the screens, aliens appear as though they are floating in 3D. A QR code will allow them to download the game.
“Taito’s modern revival of its 70s arcade classic delivers a unique immersive experience, connecting multi-generations of players in New York, across Europe and Japan,” said Ocean Labs managing director Catherine Morgan.
“Our streets and skylines are its new dimension, making Ocean’s DOOH screens the ideal portals to connect the physical and digital worlds.”
