Pink paint smear at National Gallery of Canada the latest in long line of art-related climate protests

Pink paint being smeared onto a Tom Thomson work at the National Gallery of Canada is the latest in a long line of recent attacks against art in the name of protest.

Pink paint being smeared onto a Tom Thomson work at the National Gallery of Canada is the latest in a long line of recent attacks against art in the name of protest.

A video uploaded to Facebook by the group On2Ottawa shows Kaleb Suedfeld wiping the paint onto Thomson’s 1915 landscape Northern River, before kneeling and gluing his hand to the floor before reading a written speech.

Protesting fossil fuels and citing the damage forest fires have caused across the country this year as a result of climate change, the attack follows incidents such as mashed potato being thrown at a US$111m Monet painting, the Mona Lisa being smeared with cake and the Vincent Van Gogh’s Sunflowers being attacked with tomato soup.

Thankfully Northern River is protected by glass and was undamaged. The gallery says it is collaborating with the police.
