A male orca has died at the Moskvarium aquarium in Russia, the second to have died at the Moscow facility this year.
Called Nord, the 16-year-old killer whale is one of 17 animals to have died at the facility since it opened in 2015.
The worrying number of deaths includes eleven bottlenose dolphins, a beluga whale, a seal, another orca and two walruses.
According to the aquarium, Nord died from an acute peptic stomach ulcer. He was the only male orca and one of three transient orcas housed at the aquarium.
His death follows that of Narnia, a 17-year-old female orca, who is said to have died from intestinal volvulus earlier this year.
The untimely deaths of the orcas, who can live into their 80s in the wild, have prompted conversations about conditions for cetaceans in captivity in Russia.
“Until the last day, Nord’s behaviour and medical indications showed no signs of illness. What happened is a huge loss for everyone,” said Moskvarium in a statement.
