With the UK currently in its third lockdown, London’s Royal Opera House (ROH) is offering a live stream of its production of Umberto Giordano’s Andrea Chénier to its stuck-at-home customers.

Last staged at ROH in 2015, Andrea Chénier is a verismo (realist) opera based on the life and death of André Chénier - a French poet who was executed during the French Revolution.

A cinematic version of the production has been directed by David McVicar, with historically-informed costumes and set design provided by Jenny Tiramani and Robert Jones respectively. It stars Jonas Kaufmann, Eva-Maria Westbroek and Zeljko Lucic.

ROH is streaming the performance to try and recoup some of its revenue after suffering devastating losses in 2020 from the ongoing pandemic.

“Live performance is a shared experience and our audiences are at the heart of what we do on our stages, backstage, online, in cinemas and in our communities,” said ROH in a statement.

“The global pandemic has affected all arts organisations across the world, we have lost £3 in every £5 of our income.”

The stream, supported by The Foyle Foundation, will be available from 7 PM (GMT) on January 8, while a film version of the performance will be available on-demand until February 28. Tickets cost £3 (US$4.10, €3.30). To purchase tickets, click here.
