Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth is set to host the UK’s first large-scale immersive projection domes, with Landsec partnering with Holovis to launch ApolloDomes later this year.
The two 19-metre indoor domes will debut with Halloween and Christmas experiences designed to immerse visitors in theatrical storytelling, large-scale projections and multi-sensory effects. The initiative marks the first step in a wider roll-out planned across some of the UK’s most popular retail destinations.
Developed by Holovis’ award-winning creative team – whose past projects include work for Alton Towers, SeaWorld Yas Island and Legoland New York – ApolloDomes blends cutting-edge AV technology with immersive theatre to create a new form of entertainment for shopping destinations. The project also draws on the experience of newly appointed producer Mark Hurry, whose credits include Immersive Peaky Blinders, Doctor Who: Time Fracture and The Great Gatsby – Immersive Experience.
“ApolloDomes represents a first-of-its-kind experience, blending next-gen projection technologies and media with world-class immersive theatrical performances to transport guests to an exciting, seasonal destination,” said Holovis CEO Stuart Hetherington.
“We’re extremely proud to be embarking on this journey with Landsec and are very excited to bring this level of immersive experience to guests in the UK.”
Landsec says the partnership signals a new benchmark for retail-led entertainment in the UK. “By bringing Holovis’ next-generation immersive entertainment to the UK for the very first time, our partnership will enhance some of our most popular shopping destinations into spaces that inspire, entertain, and create memorable moments for visitors of all ages,” said Ben Padley, Head of Consumer at Landsec.
With retail spaces increasingly expected to offer more than just shopping, the ApolloDomes concept is designed to meet the growing demand for experiential, family-friendly attractions. If successful, Landsec and Holovis intend to expand the model to further destinations in the year ahead, positioning the domes as a new format for large-scale entertainment in retail settings.
