New research has found that graffiti and other anti-social behaviour is on the rise at UK heritage attractions.

According to new research, commissioned by specialist heritage insurer Ecclesiastical, UK heritage organisations are becoming an increasing target of anti-social behaviour including graffiti, challenging visitor behaviour and verbal abuse.

A survey of 500 decision makers at heritage attractions, including museums, galleries, castles and stately homes, found that 32% had experienced anti-social behaviour in the last year, a 3% increase from the previous year, while three in 10 reported that their staff and volunteers had experienced verbal abuse from visitors.

The survey also found that heritage organisations are expecting an increase in crime over the next 12 months, with seven in 10 participants reporting that they are “more concerned about crime than ever before.”
