Disneyland Resort avoids strike action with new contract for workers

Disney has avoided a potential labour strike at its Disneyland Resort in California, US, after reaching an agreement with unionised workers following three months of contract negotiations.

Disney has avoided a potential labour strike at its Disneyland Resort in California, US, after reaching an agreement with unionised workers following three months of contract negotiations.

On Monday, July 29, employees ratified a three-year contract, which included a minimum wage of US$24 (€22, £19) per hour, with some jobs paying more, as well as guaranteed wage and seniority increases, with most employees set to receive an increase of US$6.10 (€5.60, £4.80) per hour over the next three years.

Other benefits included flexible attendance and sick leave policies, with the contract taking immediate effect.

The news comes after 99% of unionised theme park workers voted to authorise a strike in July, after Disney Workers Rising – a union coalition representing more than 14,000 Disney workers at Disneyland, Downtown Disney and Disney’s California Adventure – revealed that 73% of Disneyland employees were not earning enough money to cover basic expenses, while 33% were experiencing housing insecurity and 28% were struggling with food insecurity.

“These contracts are historic for Disney cast members and we’re pleased cast members’ lives will improve as a result,” said the bargaining committee that represented Disney Workers Rising.
