The troubled Miami Seaquarium is facing further problems, with the county the animal attraction is located inside seeking to terminate its lease.
Daniella Levine Cava, the mayor of Miami-Dade County, wrote a letter to Eduardo Albor, the president of The Dolphin Company, which operates Miami Seaquarium.
In the letter, Cava expressed her “profound frustration” over the Seaquarium's “multiple and repeated” instances of animal welfare violations. As such, the county is taking action by pursuing “the termination of the Amended and Restated Lease Agreement” between the aquarium and the county.
“We believe it is imperative to address these serious violations decisively and with urgency,” said a joint statement from Levine Cava and commissioner Raquel Regalado.
On November 28, the US Department of Agriculture found a range of problems, including dolphin pools in disrepair, high counts of water bacteria where animals were being kept and black mould in the penguin enclosure.
In December, two manatees reportedly kept in “ever-deteriorating conditions” were released to a sanctuary following a campaign by animal rights activists.
