Manatees Romeo and Juliet to be released from Miami Seaquarium following campaign

Two manatees reportedly kept in “ever-deteriorating conditions” at the Miami Seaquarium will soon be released to a sanctuary following a campaign by animal rights activists.

Two manatees reportedly kept in “ever-deteriorating conditions” at the Miami Seaquarium will soon be released to a sanctuary following a campaign by animal rights activists.

Following an intervention by federal wildlife authorities in Florida, 67-year-old Romeo and 61-year-old Juliet, who have been at the attraction since being rescued as calves in 1956, will soon leave.

UrgentSeas last month released a video of Romeo swimming alone in a small circular tank out of public view, with the pair kept apart for a number of months.

The US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) will move Romeo, Juliet and a third younger manatee to the sanctuary. All are suffering health problems and cannot be released into the wild.

Miami Seaquarium has been under significant pressure after a recent report from the US Department of Agriculture highlighted multiple violations in veterinary care, staffing levels and conditions in which its animals are housed.
