Brian Blessed will be among those to perform for the inaugural season of DriveINSIDE Theatre - a 68,000sq ft (6,300sq m) indoor space where people can experience a live on stage performance from the comfort of their own cars.
The Covid-secure drive-in theatre experience, located at the Trafford Centre in Manchester, UK, will run over four weeks starting on May 13, with 30 different productions being played to a maximum audience of 24,000 people.
Included in these performances will be two musicals, which will be previewed in Manchester before making their way to London. These include WhiteWitch - an immersive rock musical narrated by Blessed - and Fallen Angel, an musical set inside an airport created by award-winning composers Sara Eker and Giles Fernando.
Local performers will also be featured, with a talent show and performances from AKTA, as will West End and Broadway classics along with tribute acts for musical performers such as Queen, Tina Turner and The Rolling Stones.
Created by Beyond Theatre, the DriveINSIDE Theatre has a venue capacity of 800, with each vehicle assigned a designated parking space underneath the giant marquee.
“People love live music, ballet, opera and theatre, but they need to be completely confident that a venue is absolutely, rather than probably, Covid safe,” said Paul Levin, one of Beyond Theatre’s creators. “his virus has affected the future of our creative arts and we are excited that Driveinside will allow the industry to start getting back to some sort of normality and audiences to begin enjoying live performances again.”
Following its run in Manchester, Beyond Theatre says it has plans to take the experience across the UK, with plans to travel to both London and Edinburgh.
