Attractions.io has announced that it is expanding its navigation capabilities even further with Indoor Mapping - a new tool created to map complex spaces indoors.

Following surveys conducted with staff working at indoor attractions, Attractions.io identified a need to improve mapping of indoor attractions. For indoor attractions, GPS positioning can be unreliable, and other technical solutions, such as RFID and triangulation methods, are still in the works.

According to Attractions.io, the cultural sector faces several challenges with guests getting lost and having difficulty locating preferred exhibits or activities. Even at outdoor attractions, Attractions.io says guests tend to lose navigation features when they head into a building, which is an issue for zoos with insectariums or aquariums, or navigating on-site hotels.

Using point-to-point wayfinding, guests using Attractions.io’s Indoor Mapping system can get directions to and from anywhere on site. The app can also help guests to avoid uneven terrain, such as stairs, if accessibility is a concern.

“Traditional navigation tools often fall short in complex, multi-level spaces, leaving guests and operators in need of a solution that's more reliable and connected, so that's precisely what we aimed to address with our new Indoor, multi-level maps,” said Peter O'Dare, VP of Product for Attractions.io.

“Our commitment at Attractions.io has always been to connect the whole guest journey, and the launch of Indoor Mapping is a prime example of us delivering on this. It's about more than helping guests find their way; it's about creating a connected, memorable, and effortless experience for every visitor.”

Indoor Mapping is available as a part of Attractions.io’s MapLayr SDK and in the company’s mobile app platform. Through the app, attractions and resorts can offer guests a comprehensive service that includes access to tickets, photos, food ordering, and day planning.

For outdoor attractions with on-site buildings, guests using the Attractions.io technology can seamlessly transition from outdoor to indoor spaces. As they move close to a building with Indoor Mapping enabled, the indoor map will reveal itself. Guests can then choose wayfinding routes in exactly the same fashion as they would outdoors by interacting with specific points of interest.

“These new features work and build on the other enhancements we’ve made to the maps over the last 12 months,” said O’Dare. “This includes our unique dynamic night mode and texture effects that are now available to all customers.”

Cedar Fair recently utilised Attractions.io’s platform to launch a brand new guest experience app across all 13 of its theme parks, with the operator utilising the technology to add “flair and functionality” to the user platform. The Cedar Fair announcement is the latest in a year where Attractions.io is continuing its commitment to champion the guest experience with a host of new product releases in 2024. The news also follows the release of an industry-first in-app map with dynamic lighting that premiered at Alton Towers last year. Attractions.io is also focusing on adding more third-party integrations to the app’s growing ecosystem and offering enhanced support to integration partners in 2024.
