A fire that has destroyed more than 2,300 hectares of a national park in Argentina is the result of arson, officials have revealed.
The blaze has been burning at the Los Alerces National Park since January 25, with firefighters battling the large fire ever since as they try to prevent the inferno from reaching nearby populated areas.
“We have confirmed that the fire originated intentionally,” said Ignacio Torres, the governor of Chubut province. “Those responsible for starting the fire will have to answer to the courts.”
Firefighters battled the large blaze for several days, trying to prevent the flames from reaching nearby populated areas.
Located on the Andes of northern Patagonia, Los Alerces National Park was inscribed onto the list of World Heritage Sites in 2017, with successive glaciations molding the landscape in the region to create spectacular features such as moraines, glacial cirques and clear-water lakes.
