Culture and heritage sites across Wales are set to receive a slice of £4.5m (US$5.5m, €5.2m) over the next three years to support the government’s anti-racism action plan.

Also covering sport, Wales’ deputy minister for arts and sport, Dawn Bowden, announced the funding plan, with more than £2.8m (US$3.4m, €3.2m) already having been shared across 22 local, regional, national and independently run culture, heritage and sport organisations in the country, with projects having to demonstrate a focus on co-production and a commitment to placing lived experience at the centre of policy, service development and delivery in order to receive funding.

“Our national and local museums, galleries, libraries, theatres, and sporting venues need to be inclusive of Black, Asian and minority ethnic people and places,” said Bowden.

“Our culture, heritage and sports services must be culturally competent and reflective of the history and contribution made by Black, Asian and minority ethnic people to Welsh society.”

The wider Anti-Racist Wales Action Plan was first published in June and aims to “eliminate discrimination and barriers to the full enjoyment of all aspects of culture, heritage and sport, and to recognise and celebrate past and present racial and ethnic diversity in Wales.”

The Action Plan is part of the Welsh Government’s Programme for Government and a Co-operation Agreement with the Plaid Cymru political party.

Among already funded projects, the multi-purpose culture venue Tŷ Pawb in Wrexham has recieved support to establish a ‘multicultural hub’, where the centre’s Useful Art Space will host a range of activities led by diverse communities in the Welsh city. These activities will include arts and crafts, music and dance, culinary exchanges, cultural celebrations and more.

“The grant funding award is fantastic news and will be key in supporting us to deliver the outcomes of the Anti-Racist Wales Action Plan,” said Wrexham County Borough Council’s Hugh Jones.

“The funding will support the excellent partnership work being undertaken by Tŷ Pawb, our Community Cohesion team and Race Council Cymru, reaching out to local and regional diverse community groups and empowering them to actively lead and take advantage of cultural, arts, heritage and sport opportunities.”

The National Library of Wales will use its funding to support several projects, including ‘The Communities of Wales’, an exhibition telling stories through the lens of people who moved to the country.

Meanwhile, Amgueddfa Cymru (National Museum Wales) will host more cultural programmes and events to be co-designed with community-based organisations, individuals and artists.

Also in receipt of funding is Arts Council Wales, which will use the money to appoint more Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic creative practitioners.

Finally, the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historic Monuments of Wales will develop the ‘Places We Remember’ project, a scheme which will record the heritage of Welsh Asian communities in Wales.
