A new Harry Potter-themed world is among the most anticipated additions to Universal’s upcoming Epic Universe, with the “new chapter” of the Wizarding World set to explore 1920s Paris, as well as the British Ministry of Magic.
Opening alongside the rest of Epic Universe in Orlando in 2025, the third Wizarding World instalment takes inspiration from both the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts films, with a collection featuring a “groundbreaking” ride, as well as entertainment experiences, retail and dining options.
Starting inside a Muggle park in Paris, guests enter Place Cachée - a hidden wizarding district set in the French capital. Guests will be able to travel across countries and time, using the ‘Métro-Floo’ to travel to 1990s London and the Ministry of Magic.
Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry is the land’s signature attraction. Combining large environments, storytelling and “first-of-its-kind” ride technology Universal says the attraction will be “one of its most impressive attractions to date”.
In the ride experience, guests travel by Floo Powder for the trial of Dolores Umbridge. Entering the Ministry’s Grand Atrium, Umbridge will try to escape while on board the building’s omnidirectional lifts. Joined by Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger and a house-elf named Higgledy, the chase will see riders travel through the Ministry in their pursuit of Umbridge, avoiding Death Eaters, creatures and more along the way.
In addition to the new ride, for the first time ever in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, guests will be able to see a full-scale theatre experience - Le Cirque Arcanus.
Featuring live performers, aerialists, puppetry, special effects and more guests will encounter fantastic beasts as they follow Ringmaster Skender, who has stolen Newt Scamander’s suitcase filled with magical animals. In the experience, it’s up to circus employee Gwenlyn to rescue the creatures from Skender, with the audience taking in a spectacular show in the process.
As with other Harry Potter attractions at Universal’s theme parks, guests will be able to use interactive wands to cast spells at various locations, as well as interact with fantastic beasts such as Nifflers, Bowtruckles and a Demiguise. Guests can purchase their own wand from Cosme Acajor Baguettes Magique - “the premier Parisian wand shop”.
As well as street entertainment, including Hogwarts exchange students and an auror from the Ministère des Affaires Magiques de la France, guests can also enjoy food and purchase souvenirs from a range of themed shops, including Café L'Air De La Sirène, Le Gobelet Noir, Bar Moonshine and Bièraubeurre (ButterBeer) Cart.
“If you come to Universal Orlando, you’re going to get this trilogy of storytelling that is unlike anything else in the world,” said Mark Woodbury, chairman and CEO of Universal Destinations and Experiences, speaking about the trio of Wizarding World attractions that will populate Orlando.
Set to open in 2025, Epic Universe will be split into five immersive lands including the new Harry Potter edition, and has been presented as the operator’s “most ambitious theme park yet”.
Featuring more than 50 attractions, entertainment, dining and shopping experiences, Universal’s fourth theme park in Orlando is all about portals, with visitors travelling from between themed worlds through special pathways taking them to each immersive land.
“Epic Universe is built on an amazing concept - the idea that you can go into a world through some kind of a portal and you come out in a world you never could dream of,” said director Steven Spielberg, who is acting as a creative consultant for Universal Destinations and Experiences. “I think it’s going to feed the imagination of so many people of all ages.”
