The University of Central Florida (UCF) has announced plans to launch a master’s degree in themed experience, with the new qualification setting up students to bring different stories to life in the world of themed entertainment.
Starting in the autumn, the Master of Science in Themed Experience degree is the first and only stand-alone degree programme of its kind at a public university in the US.
Ideally located in Orlando, which is known globally for its themed entertainment experiences, the MS is being created to teach the creative skills, processes and concepts utilised to design and produce themed environments such as theme parks, zoos, aquariums, themed retail, dining, museums, virtual worlds and exhibitions.
Thanks to its close proximity with world class theme parks, attractions and resorts, UCF has built strong relationships with the tourism, hospitality, engineering and design industries.
During the two-year course, students will be given first-hand experience in creating a space where guests interact with an environment designed to convey a narrative.
Projects will differ in complexity, going from single kiosks all the way up to complex, multi-narrative theme parks, meaning students will be able to develop an understanding of planning, production, story, design and concept development at every level.
Upon graduation, UCF says that students will be able to enter the themed experience and entertainment industry in a number of creative roles, such as producer, show set designer and show writer. The skills can also be applied to a number of roles in exhibition design, retail design, museum exhibition creation and other creative positions.
"This new degree builds upon the strength and diversity of UCF with its world-class programs in engineering, art, theatre and hospitality management,” said Peter Weishar, professor and director of themed experience at UCF.
“We expect great things from our master's students who will be uniquely qualified to have a profound and positive impact on the field.”
