Universal has revealed details of Dark Universe, one of five immersive worlds set to make up the new Universal Epic Universe theme park when it opens in 2025.

Developed by Universal Creative in collaboration with Universal Pictures, Dark Universe is a horror-themed land inspired by Universal’s classic monster IP and will blend the iconic stories of legendary monsters including Dracula, The Wolf Man, Frankenstein’s Monster and the Bride of Frankenstein with a new generation of horror characters.

Making her debut at the park is Dr Victoria Frankenstein, the great-great-granddaughter of Henry Frankenstein, the protagonist of Universal Pictures’ 1931 feature film Frankenstein, who plans to continue her ancestor’s legacy with her own twisted experiments.

Guests will come face to face with Dr Victoria Frankenstein and the subjects of her experiments as they venture through Darkmoor, the ravaged village where Dark Universe is set.

An ‘electrifying’ portal, powered by the land’s own dark energy, will serve as Dark Universe’s entrance, while Frankenstein’s Manor will serve as a terrifying focal point.

The land will feature two flagship attractions; Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment and Curse of the Werewolf.

Slated as Universal’s most terrifying attraction yet, Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experience is a state-of-the-art dark ride set inside the catacombs of Frankenstein Manor, where they encounter Dr Victoria Frankenstein.

Riders will be invited inside Frankenstein’s laboratory to witness a demonstration of her attempt to control the most dangerous of monsters: Dracula. Guests will then be thrust into an adrenaline-fuelled ride through the darkness as they attempt to evade Wolf Man, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, the Brides of Dracula and the Mummy.

Curse of the Werewolf, meanwhile, is a spinning family coaster located in the woods surrounding Darkmoor. Riders enter the encampment of The Guild of Mystics, where they are warned that they bear the mark of the werewolf. Riders then board the rollercoaster where they race to escape werewolves before transforming into one themselves.

Other attractions include the Darkmoor Monster Makeup Experience, where guests of all ages can don monstrous face paint and temporary tattoos.

The land will also feature several food and beverage outlets, including Das Stakehause, a themed restaurant run by vampire familiars and offering food items such as burgers, kebabs and sandwiches. Other eateries include The Burning Blade Tavern and De Lacey’s Cottage.

Dark Universe joins the likes of Celestial Park, where visitors can use the land’s portals to jump into the other themed worlds, as well as How to Train Your Dragon Isle of Berk, Super Nintendo World and a new Harry Potter-themed land.

The highly-anticipated Epic Universe has been described as Universal’s “most ambitious theme park yet” and is the operator’s fourth Orlando-based theme park. It will feature more than 50 attractions, entertainment, dining and shopping experiences.
