Universal’s Beijing theme park and resort development finally has an opening date, with the multi-billion dollar investment set to hold its grand opening event on September 20.
Universal Beijing represents the latest step in the operator’s recovery from the dramatic effects of COVID-19 on its bottom line, with the long-awaited grand opening including the official launch of Universal Studios Beijing theme park, two resort hotels and Universal CityWalk Beijing.
Debuting with 37 rides and attractions across seven themed worlds based on some of Universal’s biggest IPs, the CN¥50bn (US$7.74bn, €6.55bn, £5.61bn) project is a joint venture between Universal and the Beijing Shouhuan Cultural Tourism Investment Company – a consortium of five Beijing state-owned enterprises.
Themed lands included in the development are the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Kung Fu Panda, Hollywood, WaterWorld, Transformers: Metrobase, Minion Land, and Jurassic World Isla Nublar. Each immersive land will feature a variety of offerings, including rides, live shows, immersive experiences, retail and themed food and beverage options.
The launch is the first phase of development for the mega project. In phase two, plans include a second theme park, a waterpark and five more resort hotels.
Trial operations
Ahead of the official launch on September 20, the park is carrying out trial operations starting September 1. The trial operations tickets are not on sale to the general public and cannot be transferred to anyone except the ticket holder.
While the opening date is set, Universal has said the launch will be “adjusted accordingly” should the pandemic have an effect. The company also revealed that it has been working closely with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to develop a series of health and safety measures for the resort during the COVID-19 pandemic.
