London’s iconic Tower Bridge is set to host a special ‘VIPooch’ day, a dog-friendly event giving canines (and their owners) exclusive access to the attraction’s East Walkway and Glass Floor.

Taking place this Sunday (June 13), the event will see the first 50 dogs to enter the attraction handed a treat bag worth £20, with pets free to roam the space as part of their London day out.

“For our visitors, one of the things they love about our attraction is that we are dog friendly,” said Chris Earlie, head of Tower Bridge, speaking to Planet Attractions.

“Covid-19 saw us install a raft of new safety measures including a one-way route to manage visitor flow. This has meant that the East Walkway is currently free for special one-off events, so we decided to create a designated area that our visitors can safely enjoy with their pooches.”

The event has been an “instant sell-out”, with plans in the works to run more like it in order to meet visitor demand.

The dog-friendly ethos extends beyond the one day event, however, with Tower Bridge declaring itself “London’s only major dog friendly attraction”.

“We’ve been welcoming dogs to Tower Bridge for decades,” said Earlie. “We understand that dogs are part of the family, so we thought; ‘why can’t our visitors bring them along on their days out when exploring London?’

“This is even more important now after the lockdown, when not only has there been a rise in people getting canine companions, but also where dogs have been so used to having their owners looking after them at home. We’re proud that our visitors can enjoy our attraction knowing that they can have their pooch right by their side.”

Tower Bridge was among the many attractions forced to close in the UK thanks to Covid-19, with the London landmark reopening to visitors on May 17.

“At a time when we’ve been cooped up inside for so long, visitors can come up and experience the thrill of seeing London roaring back to life once more,” said Earlie.

“From the high-level West Walkway, visitors can take in stunning panoramic views of the city and view the boats, cars, and people below from the Glass Floor, 42m (138ft) above the River Thames.

“Of course they can also expect their cultural fix, and discover how London’s defining landmark came to life as a working bridge built over 126 years ago. They can follow in the footsteps of the unsung heroes of Tower Bridge – from the people who created it, to the staff that keep the working Bridge operating today, and explore the historic Victorian Engine Rooms

“Myself and all of the staff are absolutely thrilled to be open again. It is just pure joy for everyone to get back to their roles. Our visitor team have been so happy to brush up again on their history of the bridge after so long, and start to interact with our early visitors wanting to experience a piece of London culture and history.”
