With social media platforms such as Facebook and TikTok automatically flagging images containing nudity, the Austrian capital of Vienna has taken some of its most famous “18+” artworks to a social platform fully accepting of the human body in all its glory - OnlyFans.
Institutions, including the famous Albertina and Leopold museums, as well as the Natural History Museum of Vienna and the Art History Museum, have been experiencing issues when posting artwork to social accounts, with artistic images being automatically flagged for nudity.
Among these flags, the Albertina had its TikTok account suspended and later blocked for sharing the work of Japanese artist and photographer Nobuyoshi Araki, while the Leopold had a video uploaded to celebrate its 20th anniversary flagged as “potentially pornographic”.
As a result, Vienna’s tourism board has decided to make the unusual move to utilise OnlyFans to display its works. The platform is known primarily as a place where users can freely share nude and pornographic content with paying subscribers.
“Vienna and its art institutions are among the casualties of this new wave of prudishness – with nude statues and famous artworks blacklisted under social media guidelines, and repeat offenders even finding their accounts temporarily suspended,” said the Vienna Tourist Board. “That’s why we decided to put the capital’s world-famous ‘explicit’ artworks on OnlyFans.
“By putting Vienna’s historical 18+ content on OnlyFans, subscribers can now view provocative works by the likes of Egon Schiele, Richard Gerstl, Koloman Moser and Amedeo Modigliani – all of which are on show for all to see in the capital.”
The first subscribers to “Vienna’s 18+ content” on OnlyFans will be gifted either a Vienna City Card or an admission ticket to see one of the artworks in person. Subscriptions are currently on offer for US$3 a month, with the introductory offer then rising to US$4.99 a month. To sign up, click here.
