The South West Museum Development (SWMD) has partnered with Kilogramme Animation Studio to develop a five-minute animated short to promote integrated pest management in the UK heritage sector.
The film, called The Museum Life of Pests, was created as part of SWMD’s Pest Partners project - a Historic England-supported scheme that encourages museums and other heritage sites to develop pest control protocols to protect their collections.
It’s been described as an ‘antidote’ to boring and overly complex written guidance and features cute animated pests delivering important information on the necessity of protecting museum collections from pest damage.
“Integrated Pest Management can sound arduous, but it’s just a way of bringing together all the actions we take to keep the museum clean, healthy and pest-free,” said Helena Jaeschke, conservation development officer for SWMD.
The film was supported by a grant from the Art Fund and features easy to follow steps to manage pests. Measures include regular building maintenance, good housekeeping, forward planning and training for all staff, both paid and volunteers.
SWMD is a charitable organisation, backed by Arts Council England, that offers funding and other support to accredited museums and other heritage sites in the South West of England.
