A pair of former pro skateboarders have donated personal skateboarding memorabilia, including two skateboard decks, to The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History.

The items were donated by filmmaker and actor Jason Lee and skateboarding legend Chris ‘Dune’ Pastras, both of whom began their skateboarding careers in the late 80s.

Lee is a pioneer of street skateboarding, which made the sport accessible to millions, and Pastras is a pro with iconic skateboarding company World Industries.

The pair went on to have successful media careers, with Lee now a successful actor, having held starring roles in Alvin and the Chipmunks, My Name is Earl and Almost Famous, while Pastras as become a filmmaker, television presenter and artist.

The donation was made during the Innoskate Sioux Falls festival, a one-of-a-kind event in South Dakota, US, organised by The Smithsonian’s Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation in partnership with USA Skateboarding and Levitt at the Falls.

It included Lee’s 1989 SMA Rocco Division skateboard as well as a copy of the April 1989 edition of international skateboarding magazine TransWorld SKATEboarding, featuring an image of Lee skating with the board. A SHUT Skateboard, ridden by Pastras in 1987 has also been donated, alongside a DVD of Stereo Skateboard’s 1994 film A Visual Sound.

Regarded as something of a cult classic amongst the skateboarding community, A Visual Sound was directed by both Lee and Pastras and features black and white and colour footage of skating with abstract stills and a jazz soundtrack.

A promotional poster of the film as well as a original promotional display provided to skateboard shops to market the film were also donated.
