Sir Patrick Vallance, chairman of the board of trustees at London’s Natural History Museum, says he believes he is in “exactly the right place”,
Vallance, who took up his position in February, became a household name in the UK through the Covid-pandemic, where he advised the UK government and the public on televised daily broadcasts.
Speaking to The Guardian, Valance shared his love for the museum, which he believes serves an important public role.
“I have always loved this place. Who wouldn’t?” he said. “This feels to me like exactly the right place to be. It’s amazing how many people get stimulated by this museum.”
He added that the museum must remain a “calm, authoritative, neutral” source of information for the environmental crises of the 21st century.
“Something I’ve picked up over the last few years is that, very often, the louder the voice, the lower the evidence base,” he said. “I feel very strongly that the museum is important because it is a source of evidence. That evidence is neutral, objective and there for everyone to use. I don’t think the role of the museum is to be a sort of advocate in some sort of campaigning sense, because we would lose our credibility.”
