SeaWorld has made a public commitment to conserve the world’s oceans in accordance with Life Below Water – the United Nations (UN) fourteenth Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 14).
The theme and marine park operator has pledged to make meaningful contributions to ensure the long-term health of the world’s oceans and the marine life that it sustains.
The commitment will also see SeaWorld take action to restore coral reef systems, contribute to cleaner and healthier waterways and implement aquaculture programmes that will reintroduce healthy and abundant fish populations to the oceans.
Additionally, SeaWorld says that it will ensure all current and future conservation, research, animal rescue and in-park sustainability effort support three key goals associated with SDG 14.
These goals are:
• Preventing and significantly reducing marine pollution of all kinds, including marine debris and nutrient pollution, from land-based activities.
• Sustainably managing and protecting marine and coastal ecosystems to avoid significant adverse impacts.
• Conserving at least 10% of coastal and marine areas, consistent with national and international law and based on the best available scientific information.
“SeaWorld has been advocating for the health and sustainability of the world’s oceans and the creatures that live in it for decades, through the rescue of animals in need, advanced marine research made possible by the study of animals in our care, and through funding of third-party programmes through our conversation fun, long-standing conservation partnerships, and public education,” said SeaWorld’s chief zoological officer, Dr Chris Dold.
“We’re proud to stand with other marine advocacy organisations and global leaders in pledging our support and continued action for UN SDG 14 to protect marine habitats and the animals who call the ocean home.”
