Perkins&Will’s spiral galaxy selected for Smithsonian’s Bezos Learning Center

Architects Perkins&Will have been chosen to design the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum’s upcoming Bezos Learning Center.

Architects Perkins&Will have been chosen to design the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum’s upcoming Bezos Learning Center.

An education and cultural centre, the building replaces a former restaurant pavilion, with Perkins&Will chosen for its “ample experience designing cultural and education spaces”.

The centre is named after Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who has donated US$200m to the ongoing expansion and renovation of the Air and Space Museum. US$130m of that sum has been allocated to the construction of the Learning Center.

Construction on the site is expected to begin in 2025, with completion planned for 2027. Perkins&Will’s design proposal for the centre was “inspired by the shape of a spiral galaxy,” which was chosen as it represents “infinite possibilities”.
