Paris mayor orders investigation into multiple harassment cases at city’s museums

The mayor of Paris has ordered the general inspectorate to investigate instances of harassment across the city’s fourteen municipal museums

Anne Hidalgo as ordered an investigation into allegations of harassment

Paris’s mayor, Anne Hidalgo, has ordered the general inspectorate to ensure that cases involving harassment in museums run by the city are investigated and properly handled so similar occurrences cannot happen again.

In the summer of 2021, a group of temporary workers at the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris sent a letter to Paris Musées alleging “cases of misogyny, sexism, racism, homophobia and sexual harassment” carried out against temporary workers by civil servants working in the museum. The letter alleged that the events were taking place “on a daily basis, even in front of the public.”

A further report published by Libération on April 9 revealed a number of concerning cases of harassment and sexist or racist remarks in six of the 14 museums operated by Paris Musées.

The publication says that there were more than 20 testimonies across the six museums, with cases of sexual or moral harassment, homophobic, racist and misogynistic remarks, and even attacks.

Following these revelations, Hidalgo announced investigations into the widespread claims, “following the publication of press articles highlighting facts of harassment and racism within several museums of the public establishment Paris-Musées.”

According to a Paris Musées spokesperson, since the publication, all reported cases have either been investigated with necessary action taken or are still being investigated. There are also plans in place to strengthen protections for victims and the processing of complaints, which Paris Musées says will soon be presented to relevant trade unions.
