A new experience celebrating the history of jazz music in America has opened at Disney’s Epcot park in Orlando, Florida.

Called The Soul of Jazz: An American Adventure, the exhibition forms part of Epcot’s The American Adventure experience. It celebrates the ‘distinctly American musical art form’ of jazz and was inspired by Disney Pixar’s newest release Soul.

The exhibition will take guests on a musical tour of America with tour guide Joe Gardner, the protagonist of Soul. Visitors will explore several influential American cities that were key in the formation of jazz music, including New Orleans, Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, New York City, San Juan and Detroit.

Guests can explore the ‘rich and surprising history’ of jazz, as well as get up close to artefacts belonging to iconic jazz musicians, including a trumpet belonging to jazz icon Louis Armstrong.

Disney Imagineers collaborated with jazz museums and experts, including pianist Jon Batiste, who provided original jazz compositions for Soul and even played Joe Gardener’s hands in the movie, to create the exhibition.

“Jazz is the story of America, it unites people from every walk of life. It’s a living, breathing art form that’s always evolving, and always changing,” said Carmen Smith, creative executive and VP of creative development and inclusive strategies at Walt Disney Imagineering.

Batiste said: “I’m a musician who has been mentored by the greats and I will continue to spread the word about this music the same way that this wonderful exhibit is doing.”
