New York’s Museum of Sex has announced plans to expand into a second location, with a Miami version coming in the spring of 2023.

International design studio Snohetta is behind the plans, which will see a warehouse in Miami converted into a 3,000sq m (32,300sq ft) space featuring three extensive exhibition galleries, retail space and a bar.

“Snohetta's collaboration with the Museum of Sex is rooted in positivity and joy,” said Anne-Rachel Schiffman, director and senior architect at Snohetta.

“As we have pursued creating spaces that bring people together, our team embraced the levity and fun that characterises Museum of Sex, working to translate this perspective into a collection of interiors that embrace fun, laughter, and togetherness.”

The museum itself will preserve, present, and celebrate the cultural significance of human sexuality, with the inaugural programme featuring ‘Super Funland: Journey into the Erotic Carnival’ as the museum’s main immersive experience. Entertaining visitors in New York since 2019, the installation is inspired by the decadent carnal origins of the carnival dating back to the Roman Bacchanal. An expanded version of the New York installation features four never-before-seen additions: Devil’s Teacup; Attack of the 50’ Woman; the SizeMologist; and Merlandia, a 40-foot-wide (12.2m) mermaid tank and performance space.

The museum will also feature Hajime Sorayama: Desire Machines; and the historical survey Modern Sex: 100 Years of Design and Decency. Four of Sorayama’s famous nine-foot-tall (2.7m) ‘sexy robot’ sculptures will feature, as will 20 never-before-seen “simultaneously futuristic and nostalgic erotic paintings”. Modern Sex: 100 Years of Design and Decency surveys the cultural and societal impact of restriction on the design, marketing, and distribution of sexual health products from the 1920s until today.

“We’re excited to reach this major milestone in our history and to bring our vision to the vibrant cultural landscape of Miami,” said Daniel Gluck, executive director and founder of the Museum of Sex.

“Our inaugural programming perfectly embodies our ambitions to be a thought-provoking forum around sex and sexuality, and to bring forth a unique, publicly loved, and critically acclaimed cultural offering to Miami.”

Founded in 2002, the Museum of Sex has launched over 40 exhibitions committed to preserving, presenting, and celebrating the cultural significance of human sexuality. Its exhibitions and programs span genres that reflect the vibrant complexity of human sexuality, connecting the present with the past, and balancing the serious and the playful. The Museum of Sex is devoted to bringing the best of current scholarship to the widest possible audiences and is committed to encouraging public awareness, discourse and engagement.
