An art museum dedicated entirely to digital art will open in Seattle, US, in January 2022.

Billed as the first fine art gallery to only exhibit blockchain art, the Seattle NFT Museum was founded by Seattle-based tech executives Jennifer Wong and Peter Hamilton, who wanted to provide a space where audiences could physically interact with digital art pieces.

“Viewing digital art in a physical space helps to ground the NFT experience, unlocking our imaginations for what is to come,” said a statement from the Seattle NFT Museum.

Located in the city’s Belltown district, the museum will feature 30 exhibits displayed on custom-designed screens, the result of a partnership with Samsung, alongside QR codes, which when scanned will take visitors to more digital artworks.

For the uninitiated, NFTs, or non fungible tokens, are digital assets, stored on a blockchain, that can be instantly verified or identified. The Seattle NFT Museum has partnered with NFT art collector Aaron Bird, who will loan works from his collection for the museum’s inaugural exhibition. Works will include Larva Lab’s CryptoPunks series, some of which have been traded for more than US$10m (€8.7m, £7.3m), as well as art by Tyler Hobbs and Erick Calderon, AKA Snowfro.

Other featured artists will include Robbie Trevino, Neon Saltwater and Charles Peterson.

“Digital art pushes the boundaries of physical space without the limitations of mediums and materials,” said Hamilton and Wong in a statement.

“The imagination of NFT artists and creators is thrilling,” added Wong, “We wanted to create a space to serve the NFT community while helping put Seattle on the map as a hub for NFT and Blockchain innovation.”
