Connecticut’s Mystic Aquarium has partnered with the developers of the state’s first offshore wind farm to conduct studies of the effects of the turbines on marine mammals and sea turtles.
Ørsted and Eversource have announced the partnership with the aquarium, which is part of a US$1.25m grant studying the impacts of the climate crisis and educating the public on solutions to these challenges.
“Offshore wind energy will play a significant role in fighting climate change, which is one of the biggest threats to the health of marine ecosystems,” said Katie Cubina, president and CEO of Mystic Aquarium.
“We absolutely need the benefits of renewable offshore wind energy to help stem environmental damage caused by fossil fuels, but we also need to ensure that wind turbines are installed and operated in a responsible manner that minimises negative impacts on the marine ecosystem.”
