The Museum of Ice Cream (MOIC) is set to open a new location in Chicago, US, in 2022.

The ice cream-themed art installation, known as an ‘experium’, is credited with beginning the trend for ‘Instagram museums’.

Occupying 13,544sq ft (1,258sq m), the museum will be housed in the Tribune Tower on North Michigan Avenue and will feature 14 installations, including MOIC’s signature attraction - a ball pit filled with antimicrobial plastic sprinkles.

It will also pay tribute to its Chicago location, with a jelly bean-filled replica of Cloud Gate, a bean-shaped sculpture in Chicago’s Millennium Park, as well as an ice cream concoction shaped like a Chicago-style hot dog.

The museum will offer a 60- to 90-minute guided tour with ice cream breaks, a restaurant, a speakeasy-style bar and a miniature golf course. It will also be the first MOIC location to offer an educational exhibition of historic ice cream memorabilia.

Potential exhibits could also include disco rooms, a bouncy castle and a rainbow cloud balloon.

First opened in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District in New York in 2016, the Museum of Ice Cream became a cultural phenomenon, with celebrities and influencers alike flocking to the attraction to take selfies in front of the art installations.

MOIC was founded by a then 24-year-old Maryellis Bunn, who told New York magazine in 2017 that she hoped to be the “next Disney” and she planned to open 180 locations around the globe.

Several locations in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, SoHo; New York, Austin and Singapore soon followed, with the San Francisco branch permanently closing its doors in July 2021 after four years due to the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The opening date for the Chicago MOIC is yet to be determined.
