Munich’s ever-expanding surf contingent will soon have a new destination attraction to call home, after the municipality of Hallbergmoos officially approved plans for Surftown MUC - a major new development utilising WhiteWater’s Endless Surf wave technology.

A 20,000sq m (215,000sq ft) development boasting authentic running waves that can be generated every 10 seconds for up to 180 meters, Surftown MUC will be open to surfers of all levels, with adjustable waves through pressure conversion offering personalised sports, training and leisure experiences.

Set to open in 2023, the attraction, which is located near the Munich International Airport, will offer a wide variety of activities, including gastronomy, event spaces, fitness areas, sunbathing areas and lounge spaces with children’s entertainment.

The development has been conceived as environmentally friendly, with the entire Endless Surf system technically optimised for CO2 neutrality. In addition, the park’s electricity comes from renewable energy sources – 80% of which will be from the company’s own photovoltaic systems.

“Besides the fun of surfing, we are also united by the absolute conviction that a project like Surftown MUC can only be innovative if it’s also designed to be sustainable and climate-neutral,” said Chris Boehm-Tettelbach, co-founder of the project.

Riding the Eisbach

Despite being an inland location, Munich does have a certain amount of surf pedigree, with the man-made Eisbach wave popular among its residents since its creation in 1972. Located just beyond the Haus der Kunst art museum, the river forms a rolling one-metre wave. With cold and shallow water, however, the wave is only suitable for very experienced surfers.

For less experienced Munich surfers wanting to ride Eisbach, Surftown, which is set to break ground in Autumn 2021, will provide the perfect training ground.

“This project is a showcase for inland surf by bringing a world class wave to an enthusiastic local surf community in a landlocked location,” said Baptiste Caulonque, chief commercial officer of Endless Surf. “The venue will become a major attraction for Munich, with breaking waves visible as planes land.”
