Malaysia’s US$800m Genting SkyWorlds has finally opened its doors

One of Asia’s most anticipated theme parks has finally opened its doors with Genting SkyWorlds offering a number of Fox IPs and attractions following a near-decade-long wait

Following a near decade-long wait following a number of delays and setbacks, Genting SkyWorlds has finally opened its doors to the public, with the park offering a host of new attractions and major IPs to the Malaysian market.

The 105,000sq m (1.13 million sq ft) park, which has been developed at a cost of around US$800m (€700m, £591.4m), includes a mix of 26 movie-inspired thrill rides, dark rides, children’s rides and water rides. The park also features shops and themed outlets.

Originally supposed to be the first-ever Twentieth Century Fox theme park, the attraction near Kuala Lumpur was announced to much fanfare in 2013 following a licensing agreement deal, with a series of issues halting the development process by close to ten years.

Through that timeframe, the park’s opening was delayed a number of times with Fox almost completely dropping out of the project altogether following Disney’s takeover of the company.

The near-split was messy, with Genting filing a lawsuit against the Disney-owned Fox, which then launched a countersuit against Genting, claiming that "Genting’s failure to 'soft open' the park by June 2018 gave Fox the right to terminate the agreement without regard to whether Genting was at fault”.

Disney and Genting would ultimately reach an agreement in 2019, however, with the rebranded Genting Skyworlds featuring a number of Fox IPs, including Night at the Museum, Rio, Epic, Robots and Ice Age.

Currently open in its soft phase, a number of additional IPs are set to come to the park, including Planet of the Apes and Independence Day. Two Ice Age attractions are still to open, including Expedition Thin Ice, which is set to be a trackless dark ride, and Acorn Adventure - a 700m (2,296ft) rollercoaster by Beijing Shibaolai Amusement Equipment that reaches heights of 25m (82ft). Also to come is a Planet of the Apes 3D dark ride, along with a number of other attractions.

Due to current Covid-19 restrictions, the park is only able to operate at 50% capacity. With no restrictions, the attraction can accommodate up to 40,000 visitors each day. As part of its soft opening, Genting is offering a 20% discount on tickets prices until March 31.
