London’s Young V&A museum, formerly the V&A Museum of Childhood, will reopen on July 1, 2023, following a three-year redevelopment.
Housed inside a Grade-II listed building in East London’s Bethnal Green, the Young V&A is the result of a £13m (US$15.5m, €14.6m) investment funded by private donations, including a significant endowment from the Wolfson Foundation.
Created by architects De Matos Ryan, with fit-out services provided by AOC Architects, the museum has been designed in collaboration with children to encourage young visitors to develop their creative skills through design, play and performance.
It will feature three galleries: Play, Design and Imagine, the design of which has been informed by research into early years’ development. Other facilities include workshop spaces and a reading room.

Young V&A has also revealed details of its inaugural exhibition; Japan: Myths to Manga.
Opening in October, the exhibition will explore the influence of Japanese culture with several interactive activities from Studio Ghibli animations including Ponyo and My Neighbor Totoro, as well as a role-playing browser game developed by Google.
Objects on display will include a series of sculptures from Keita Miyazaki and a moving installation of 1,000 cranes – a symbol of remembrance from the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park in Japan.
Other exhibits will include an interactive Minecraft installation, as well as several murals created by street artist Mark Malarko, works by climate activist Greta Thunberg, artwork created by Extinction Rebellion and ‘This is Me’, a display of portraits by photographer Rehan Hamil.
