Jeff Shell has left his position as CEO of NBCUniversal – a subsidiary of Comcast and overseer of Universal Destinations & Experiences – after a misconduct investigation found he had an ‘inappropriate relationship’ with a female co-worker.
Shell departed the media giant on Sunday, April 23, after almost 20 years, following a complaint of inappropriate behaviour.
Shell’s removal has been described as a ‘mutual decision’ between him and Comcast and was announced in a joint statement, where Shell admitted to the relationship and apologised to his colleagues.
“I had an inappropriate relationship with a woman in the company, which I deeply regret. I’m truly sorry I let my Comcast and NBCUniversal colleagues down, they are the most talented people in the business and the opportunity to work with them the last 19 years has been a privilege,” Shell said.
In a staff memo, Comcast chairman and CEO Brian L. Robers and president Mike Cavanagh said: “We built this company on a culture of integrity. Nothing is more important than how we treat each other.
“You should count on your leaders to create a safe and respectful workplace. When our principles and policies are violated, we will always move quickly to take appropriate action as we have done here.”
A successor has yet to be announced, however, according to a report from Variety company officials are in “no rush” to find a replacement for Shell and are unlikely to appoint an interim CEO. In the meantime, Shell’s senior team will report directly to Cavanagh.
