There might be quite a lot of national days about but none can surely be as important as August 16 - National Rollercoaster Day.
Your annual day in the calendar to celebrate everything rollercoaster, the event celebrates rollercoasters all the way back to their inception in the early 1500s.
First thought to have been developed in Russia, the original versions of rollercoasters were made on with icy ramps. People would slide down them, often getting injured in the process.
It wasn’t until the 1700s when it was thought the addition of wheels would be a good idea, which meant people were able to continue to ride the attractions during the summer months when there was no ice.
The 1900s onwards, of course, are the golden age of the rollercoaster, with the rise in popularity leading to spectacular additions such as the world’s first looping rollercoaster.
Fastforward to today and you have all sorts of rollercoasters boasting all sorts of firsts. But which is your favourite? Here’s a look at a personal favourite, PortAventura’s Shambhala.
