Germany’s HarzVenture expands operations with new Bad Harzburg dark ride attraction

The German city of Bad Harzburg has a new dark ride addition, with its operator HarzVenture hoping the new attraction proves popular as tourists seek entertainment options during the winter months

The CEO of an attraction in a popular tourist destination in Germany has said a new dark ride addition will have a significant impact, particularly in its winter season.

Founded in 2014, HarzVenture is made up of a series of outdoor offerings in and around the city of Bad Harzburg, with its attractions including ziplining, high ropes and adventure golf. While very popular in the summer, in winter, fewer options in the area are available to tourists visiting the area.

“Here in the Harz Mountains, our problem is the weather,” said Holger Kolb, CEO of HarzVenture, speaking to Dark Ride Database.

“There’s less snow in the winter and it’s more rainy and windy. For outdoors in good weather we’re great, but for bad weather, we needed to take the people indoors.”

Opened to the public last month, Hickhack um die Harzburg (Hiccup around the Harzburg) tells the story of King Heinrich IV, who in real life used to live in Harzburg castle above the city. Built by Attraktion!, the new ride sits inside a new building in the city. It features the debut of the company’s Circulum360 ride system - a combination of a revolving theatre and a simulator.

According to Dark Ride Database, while technically a show ride, the new addition feels much like a true dark ride due to the combination of both physical sets and multimedia scenes. The story tells a local saga in a family-friendly way, something that works well in a tourism-orientated town such as Bad Harzburg.

“This is the first time we have invested in an indoor ride, that was a big step for us,” said Kolb. “The feedback for our opening has been great and I’m very satisfied with the results.”
