Zaha Hadid Architects have unveiled designs for a new science museum in China, featuring the trademark elegant curves made famous by the firm’s late founder Zaha Hadid.
The Shenzhen Science and Technology Museum, expected to open in 2023, will be a pinnacle of the Guangming Science City in the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Science and Technology Innovation Corridor.
The 125,000sq m (1.3 million sq ft) attraction aims to put education at its centre. It will facilitate youth education in Shenzhen as well as focus on collaboration with universities, schools and innovation centres across the country.
The U-shaped structural design responds to the exterior Guangming Park and proximate city environment and features an inner atrium.
Inside, multiple exhibition areas are planned, some of which can be modified in shape and size to suit different types of exhibitions.
Shenzhen has benefited from progressive government policies and investment over recent decades and the sprawling metropolis is considered one of China’s most modern, wealthy and expensive cities.
High-tech, internet and electronics industries are huge contributors to the city’s success, with globally recognised firms like Tencent and Huawei headquartered there.
Zaha Hadid Architects other cultural projects in China include the Guangzhou Opera House (2010) and the Meixi Lake culture and arts centre – including a contemporary art museum and theatre – in Changsha (2017).
